Find information about University of Wisconsin paramedic program, registering for degree programs, and taking free tests online. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing job areas, and for good reason. As the population ages, medical care will continue to expand. If you complete the paramedic program, for example, there are a variety of nursing concentrations that may appeal to you, such as EMT training, the nursing tech program, or occupational rehabilitation. Check with the paramedic department for an updated schedule of classes, registration deadlines, and a list of paramedic program requirements. Due to advances in medical systems, there is a growing skill-shortage of trained emergency nurses, and of medical personnel in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for University of Wisconsin.

EMTs and paramedics work both indoors and out, and in all types of weather. In general, there's a high risk for contracting illnesses or experiencing work-related injuries. In addition, EMTs and paramedics may be exposed to communicable diseases, such as hepatitis-B and AIDS, as well as to violence from mentally unstable or combative patients. The work is not only physically strenuous but can be stressful, involving life-or-death situations. Many EMTs and paramedics are required to work more than 40 hours a week.

The job prospects for paramedics and emergency medical technicians are good, particularly in larger cities. Further, EMTs and paramedics who have advanced education and certification enjoy the best job prospects. Growth in employment opportunities for paramedic program graduates is largely due to increased call volumes of medical emergencies. In addition, the time that EMTs and paramedics spend with each patient is increasing. As a result, when an ambulance arrives, it takes longer to transfer the patient from the care of paramedics to the staff of the hospital's emergency room.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Physical therapist assistants (PTA) and physical therapist aides work under the supervision of physical therapists, helping patients who are recovering from injuries regain movement and manage chronic pain. Further, they develop exercise programs that will help patients improve cardiovascular function, regain flexibility, and build muscle mass. All states require physical therapist assistants to have an associates degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program. These programs typically last 2 years, and include courses in algebra, English, anatomy, physiology, and psychology. PTAs gain hands-on experience during supervised clinical work rotations, and may earn certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and other first-aid skills.

Licensure typically requires graduation from an accredited physical therapist assistant program and passing the National Physical Therapy Exam, administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Physical therapist aides, on the other hand, are not required to be licensed but earn less salary. Some states require that applicants pass additional state-administered exams, undergo a criminal background check, and be at least 18 years old. Employment of physical therapist assistants and aides is projected to grow 40 percent from 2015 to 2025, much faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for physical therapist assistants and aides was $42,980 in May 2015.
